At Easter, we like to make the most of time with our families. It is an opportunity for sweet treats and well-cooked roasts. But Easter activities needn’t stop at food. There are plenty of other opportunities over the Easter period. Some you can do with the grandkids, but make sure to also take time for yourself.
Where Does Easter Come From?
Most of our modern ideas about Easter come from Christian beliefs. It is a period of remembrance and celebration, looking back at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his subsequent resurrection. However, you may be surprised to learn that some traditions predate Christianity. Instead, they are derived from a combination of Judaism and pagan beliefs.
Perhaps most significant is the word ‘Easter’ itself. Historians currently believe the festival is named after a springtime goddess known as Ostara. It is also from this deity that we get symbols such as eggs and Easter rabbits.
Easter Activities with the Grandkids
The arrival of Easter is a great way of knowing that spring has truly begun. The weather is getting warmer and that means more opportunities for spending time outside. It is also an opportunity to spend more time with the grandkids.
3. Arts & Crafts
Easter is a great opportunity for getting the glue out and using up old materials. If you’ve got a stack of old newspaper you need to get rid of, why not make a papier-mâché bunny? Print out some cute pictures and stick them on lollypop sticks to create some puppets. Or why not empty some eggs and dye them in a rainbow of colours?
Easter activities like arts & crafts help encourage the imagination. This is something that is good for you and for the grandkids. An active imagination also means an active mind, after all. Plus, at the end of it you will have some lovely decorations to show off.
2. Baking
We all like to indulge in some sweet treats at Easter. Temptation is everywhere, with Easter eggs on the shelves and the sweet smell of hot cross buns in the air. However, everything tastes better when you bake it yourself.
This year, why not bake some Easter cakes with the grandkids? You can revisit old favourites like chocolate nests or try something more exciting like macarons. The great thing about baking with the grandkids is that you’re also secretly boosting their life skills.
1. Easter Egg Hunts
It doesn’t matter how old your grandkids are, this is great fun for all the family. Even the adults might want to get involved! For the younger members of the family, simply hide some colourful eggs around the garden and let them run wild. Older participants, however, might be interested in something more akin to a scavenger hunt. Write clues and send them out to find the eggs.
An Easter egg hunt could be a great way to use the colourful eggs produced during arts & crafts. And when you’re all done everyone can head inside for cakes and chocolate. It’s a great way to keep yourself and the grandkids active, and to enjoy three Easter activities in one.
Easter Activities for Adults
Just because it’s Easter doesn’t mean you can’t do things for yourself. The nicer weather means you have plenty of opportunities for getting out and about. You don’t even have to do anything Easter-related; just make the most of the time to yourself.
3. Visit the Beach
The beach is often an underrated destination at springtime. Though the weather isn’t yet at its warmest, and there can still be a bit of a chill on the sea air, a visit to the beach is a great opportunity to unwind. You may not be sunbathing on the sand, but the salty air can do wonders for your health.
Another advantage of a springtime beach visit is that it will likely not be particularly busy. This means you can explore at your leisure without the chaos of crowds. Indulge in some fish and chips, and maybe even take a paddle in the water. You might be surprised how refreshing the sea can be at spring.
2. Easter Gardening
Springtime means that flowers are blooming and gardens are coming to life. Why not take advantage of Easter to do some extra gardening and give your plants the care they deserve? One of the more popular Easter activities amongst Christian groups is caring for Easter lilies.
And if you’re non-Christian you could switch out lilies for a different springtime flower such as tulips. Putting some extra time into your garden over Easter could have it looking better than ever as you head into summer.
1. Just Relax
Who says Easter activities have to be active? Take advantage of your free time to pamper yourself. Pour yourself a hot, scented bath, grab your favourite book, and just let your troubles wash away. A few hours of relaxation could be exactly what you need this time of year.
This is especially true if you have engaged in any of our Easter activities with the grandkids! You may even find that a gentle stroll around the park with a loved one is all you need this Easter. In the end, it’s about doing what makes you happy.
